Find an Agent and Get a Contract with...

A Major Publisher

Pros and Cons

Pros - If you can find that agent who will find that publisher who will give you that contract that will pay you those big royalties, I wholeheartedly recommend you do it!

Cons - The competition is fierce, the odds are extremely poor, and even if you find one, the financial returns are low.

Do it Yourself!

Self Publish

Pros and Cons

Pros - Less expensive since you are putting in the "sweat equity" and doing all the prep work yourself. But, if you know how to do it and don't mind the research and work involved, go for it!

Cons - Getting those ISBN and Library of Congress Numbers, Copyrighting, Formatting, Setup, Design, Layout, Finding and working with a Printer, Reviewing Proofs and more...is more complicated than you might think.

Standard Publication Plan

This is the most cost-effective way to get your book published. But it also means you will have to do most of the setup work, including Final Editing, Interior Content Formatting and Cover Design. For this option a one-time Contract Fee of $500 will cover: ISBN Number, Library of Congress Number, Copyright Acquisition, Amazon/Barnes & Noble Setup, and one Proof. In addition to the Contract Fee you, as author, agree to purchase a minimunm of 500 of your printed books, which will be shipped to you directly. Although actual costs are based on several factors (E.g. page count, size, binding, illustrations, etc.), the typical cost is about $10 per book for a book with a $15 retail value. That means you will be able to sell your 500 copies and profit $2,500 on those direct sales.

Premium Publication Plan

Most authors feel comfortable with their content, but require assistance with all the other components involved in getting your book to press. For this option a one-time Contract Fee of $900 will cover: ISBN Number, Library of Congress Number, Copyright Acquisition, Amazon/Barnes & Noble Setup, and three Proofs. It will also include five (5) hours work for Interior Content Formatting and Cover Design (additional hours billed at $100/hour and this does not include illustrations). As with the Standard Option, in addition to the Contract Fee you, as author, agree to purchase a minimunm of 500 of your printed books, which will be shipped to you directly. Although actual costs are based on several factors (E.g. page count, size, binding, illustrations, etc.), the typical cost is about $10 per book for a book with a $15 retail value. That means you will be able to sell your 500 copies and profit $2,500 on those direct sales.
